Important information for Viagra Patients

Viagra is a commonly prescribed drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. It also goes by the name sildenafil. Viagra works through relaxing the muscles found at the base of the penis and causing more blood to flow to the penis.

Sildenafil also goes by another brand name, Revatio. This form of the drug is used to improve exercise capacity in men and women and also treats pulmonary arterial hypertension. Do not take Viagra at the same time as Revatio, unless prescribed by your doctor.

Although Viagra is mainly used to treat erectile dysfunction in men, your doctor may also prescribe it for other purposes.

Viagra can react with other medications. It is important that you do not use Viagra if you are currently using a nitrate drug for heart or chest problems. Nitrate drugs include isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide dinitrate, and nitroglycerin, as well as some recreational drugs such as nitrite or amyl nitrate. Combining these drugs with Viagra can lead to a sudden and deadly decrease in blood pressure. If you experience nausea, dizziness, numbness/tingling/or pain in your neck/jaw/chest/or arms during sexual activity while using Viagra, stop immediately and contact your doctor. You could be experiencing serious side effects of Viagra.

Viagra should only be used once in a 24-hour period. If after taking Viagra you experience an erection that lasts more than 4 hours, or one that is painful, seek emergency attention immediately. An extended erection can result in permanent damage to the penis.

In a small amount of patients, Viagra has led to a decrease of blood flow to the eye's optic nerve. This causes sudden vision loss. This side effect is extremely rare, and typically is found in patients who have also had diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, pre-existing eye conditions, high cholesterol, those who smoke, and those over 50 years of age. Currently, it is unknown if Viagra is the cause of the vision loss. If you experience sudden vision loss, discontinue using Viagra and seek emergency medical attention immediately.

When using Viagra, avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol can decrease the effectiveness and increase the side effects of Viagra. You should also avoid using other medications used to treat impotence, unless prescribed by your doctor.

In the case of an actual or suspected overdose, seek emergency medical attention immediately or contact the Poison Control help line. Symptoms of overdose include nausea, feeling light-headed, chest pain, fainting, and irregular heartbeat.
